My Impossible Burger Taste Test

After hearing so much hype about the Impossible Burger, I was delighted to have an opportunity to try one out during my stay at the Hilton Washington Dulles Airport for the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Impossible Burger is made completely from plants, with a soybean extract called “heme” that’s supposed to mimic the “bloodiness” of a beef burger. From all online taste comparisons between Impossible Burger and their biggest competitor, Beyond Beef, most folks seem to be impressed with the “beefiness” of Impossible Burger. Burger King had a viral video proclaiming longtime Whopper lovers dumbfounded at not being able to tell the Impossible Whopper apart from its real beef version.

So with unrealistically high expectations, here’s my personal take on the Impossible Burger:

Verdict: meh.

Decent chew texture, but definitely NOT beef tasting. There’s a weird chemical/herbal taste that’s similar to other vegan burger’s I’ve had in the past. Of course, when the burger is smothered in condiments, that off-putting taste can be masked pretty well. Another factor may have been that the burger looked overcooked, since there was no “bloodiness” or any sort of juices dripping as advertised.

I’m willing to give this one more try if I can be assured that it’s prepared better, but I’m not holding my breath…
